Internship Application

Note: We currently do not have any remaining positions for Semester 2 of 2024-2025!

A participatory internship at the Hanze Makerspace is a little different than with an external company. An internship in an external company is well suited to students that need to get used to full time working hours, professional deadlines and communication styles. While these are a feature of an internship with us too, we try to place more emphasis on skills development and broadening. That’s why we try to look for students that may have had a few professional jobs and/or an internship already and feel they really want to dive into more and deeper skillsets this time around.

Facts & Figures:
– Expand your production and design skills by getting to know 30+ production facilities.
– Work in a very international environment with 10+ nationalities and primarily english work environment.
– Daily tasks include: Production, Design and Concepting support, Workshop maintenance and supervision.
– 36 hour work weeks in 9 shifts of 4 hours. Paid.
– 20 work weeks in length, almost 1 full semester.

We ask each intern at the Makerspace to also tackle one specific personal project during their 20 weeks. While you spend about half your time shadowing one of the professional instructors and getting to know project-based design and production workflows, you use the other half of your time to work on one bigger currently running makerspace project. This can be the design and production of a type of product, the conceptualization and building of a piece of software, or the engineering of a specific piece of tooling or experimental setup. We have some projects on the shelf usually, but are also often open to your suggestions based on your learning goals.
We look for students with an inherent love for dynamic, creative environments and creating things. Personal spare time projects or creative/technical passions are usually the best way for us to get an idea of what drives you as a person. Portfolio’s, pictures and personal websites are a great way to showcase those, but you can also tell us a little about what you may generally love doing outside of your studies that overlaps with this creative and technical domain.
The Makerspace has a very broad offering of tools, processes and machines. It can be a little much to anyone walking in, let alone someone unfamiliar with the domain of making. Any new team member of the Makerspace has quite a task ahead usually in getting to know all these things in order to be able to advise visitors. It’s essential therefore that you can take a deep breath and prioritize to determine where to start and how to get to your end goal. With a little help from your colleagues of course 😉.
As a member of the Hanze Makerspace team, you of course get a little more leniency on when and where you get to use our production facilities. One of the perks of the job! You might even find you have a bit of time here and there each week to work on your own passion projects at work (as long as it doesn’t interfere with your daily tasks).
Each programme is a little different in how they desire internships to be structured or planned out. For you this might mean more or less emphasis on project work, a lot or not that much documentation, more or less research, etc.
After you submit this form, the core team gets your application and will review if we wish to invite you to a follow-up interview not long after. If you don’t hear from us, feel free to check in, but we usually try to get back to people within the months leading up to each following semester.
