The HMS is Hiring!

Table of Contents

Current recruitment round for Semester 2 2022-2023 ends Wednesday 14th and is open to all students of the Hanze UAS, regardless of programme.

The Hanze Makerspace opened in September, making its facilities, tools and materials available for all the enterprising builders and explorers of the Hanze. Already we are happy to announce to have helped fellow students and staff with nearly 1000 requests through our dashboards and are very happy to see so many students already finding our spaces a familiar place to build real things!

Our goal however, is not just to help visiting makers, but also to offer some students the opportunity to work and/or intern at the Hanze Makerspace for one or multiple semesters. It’s a great place for motivated students to learn to work within a team, with people from many disciplines, projects of many natures and a huge array of tools and techniques.

Role of Student-Assistant

Do you like designing, sketching, crafting, coding, constructing or otherwise making things? Does the prospect of learning about all sorts of new tools and methods to make things excite you? Then we suspect you might be a real maker at heart!

If the prospect of also getting paid for making things excites you all the more, then you might be exactly the kind of person we’re seeking to expand the team for the coming semester!

Student-Assistants at the HMS are our first point of contact for visiting makers and are trained to know a little about everything at the makerspace in order to be able to advise, maintain and train effectively. The HMS team is an amicable group of like-minded makers joined by their shared passion for making real things with specialisations ranging from digital, to hand-crafts, to the big ol’ metal working machinery.

Activities

  • Greet and assist hanze students and staff in H0.70 and H0.100 to help them with whatever questions they might have.
  • Support visitors in sketching out, concepting and executing ideas.
  • Guide the use of tools and machines and monitor safe working practices
  • Run production jobs for dashboard users, using the laser cutters and 3D printers primarily to produce parts for online student/staff requests.
  • Keep spaces and tools clean, well-maintained and ensure visitors keep things tidy.
  • Contribute your own projects and customizations to the HMS and its facilities!

Benefits & Requirements

Our student assistants are hired for semester-long contracts, running September-February for semester 1 and February-July for semester 2. The hourly rate is approx. €15/hour before tax for an 8 hour/week contract (about €420/month after tax). What we require of future Student-Assistants:

  • Enthusiasm for making things and eagerness to learn about the many facilities at the makerspace! – Practical experience with anything woodworking, electronics, metalworking, arts, textiles, media or otherwise is appreciated but not directly required. Anyone is free to apply and learn on the job.
  •  A strong grasp of both reading/writing, as well as conversational grasp of the english language. – We work with a large team of students including many internationals. English is therefore our primary language for communication internally and externally.
  • Weekly availability for 2 scheduled shifts a week (09:00-13:00, 13:00-17:00 and 17:00-21:00), of which at least 1 morning or afternoon shift.
